I just saw this and was thinking the same thing. But then, it seems like yesterday we were heading to St. Maarten for our very first visit, too. In any event, I'd like to add my wish the kids had a very happy although belated birthday, too.

Kathy, Not an owner and have never stayed there, but in talking to some people on the island last week, they were staying there and were NOT particularly happy. Trouble is, there are a couple of buildings and they said they'd spoken with others in a different building who were very pleased with everything at the Sapphire but they still felt their unit was a disaster. The only positive th

Just back, and sadly, we avoided many of our favorite French beaches because of the heavy amounts of seaweed. Took an around the island daytrip and was amazed at all the floating seaweed this trip - so I would also agree with Barbara and WWII that Maho general area or even Simpson Bay area whould fit your requirements nicely.

Martha, with all due respect I'm thinking that's a question you really should get an 'official' response to as opposed to one from any of us who may 'think' we're giving you good info. But that's just my opinion and there may be those here who actually can help you...... Hope you're having a good time. We're also on island and livin' and l

TY, B. From all I'm reading, the no water situation seems to be island wide. No? I was worried mostly about any potential storm surge and glad to hear that was a non-issue.

I've read the newspaper reports and scanned most all that I've been able to find regarding the island and related recent storm damage, but little has been said about Philipsberg and Front and Back Street businesses and most specifically, those businesses that front the beach there. Can anyone shed any light as to how they fared throughout the storm? TYIA, pat

Barbara, Philippe, Elaine and all who live there and frequent this forum, As saddened as we always are when these things happen, at least loss of life was at a minimum, or so we're now hearing. St. Maarten/St. Martin(ers) are a strong, resourceful and resilient group of people. Its heart-breaking to see the photos and to hear the stories, knowing that so many have lost their liveliho

Thank you, Barbara, for your on island updates. And thank you, Gert, for setting this up so many years ago for just this reason and for keeping it active all these years. Be safe, St. Martiners. Be safe!

16. Re: why
Tom2, Aside from the other answers you've been given, Facebook and TTOL, the fact remains this site is checked periodically and if a question is asked, a response will generally follow when possible if actual knowledge or information is available. But I don't think it's ever been a chitty chatty board - that wasn't why it was started anyway. I'm glad it's here an

So many variables here but I'm thinking probably not if you're genuinely planning to cover a decent family rental, utilities, transportation expenses, insurances, and groceries along with preschool fees for your child and daily incidentals like clothing and entertainment costs now and then, and then still manage to save $2000. a month. Is your spouse hoping to obtain a job and augme

My best suggestion would be to contact the church directly and ask what their requirements are and if it would be appropriate during one mass over the other. Perhaps someone more familiar with the area could provide the email address, phone number and/or the name of the church to help you with this?

Bess, Yes, you can take a private car. Just tell the taxi monitor at the taxi queue that this is what you want to do. I don't know the price and the time should be about or less than a half hour but traffic can and often does throw a monkey wrench into the best of plans, or you might get lucky and manage to beat the crowds. You could also make prearrangements with a driver to meet yo

Just a thought here and not meant to encourage or discourage, but if you haven't already done so, I would definitely make sure I personally know and thoroughly understand the rules of residency and also the basic labor laws as they apply to island living before getting too involved with the island on a more permanent basis. Residency requirements in particular might end up throwing a huge mo

And from what I understand from one of the many reputable jewelers, that price isn't anything to sneeze at. The cruise lines demand a huge fee to be on their "recommendeded" A list of shops.

My only disclaimer is I thought I had posted this here yesterday. Woops!! ...finally, the end of our Spring trip. We had a wonderful trip 4/19 through 5/6, staying at the Towers and at the Grand Case Beach club. I’m going to try to wrap up our trip in short fashion. (She says with a knowing smile....) We flew AA 1596 from JFK on 4/19 – good seats up front and a great flight with ear

I could be wrong, Johnny, but many don't consider this to be a chitty-chatty forum but more of an 'if you have a question, ask it here' and people will try to respond to the best of their ability. Nothing wrong with either one and each has its own usefulness. We're long time island visitors and check in on this forum fairly regularly but one thing I WON'T do is respon

ron, You can always find O'Douls (green for sure - amber rarely), and occasionally Becks NA. We've never seen St. Pauly Girl and have looked extensively for it. There may be others available but LeGrand Marche and the Gourmet Marches usually have a pretty good supply so that would probably be your best bet for a first look.

Right, B, and on SXM it also helps you to identify the huge potholes and 'sleeping policemen' ie - speed bumps, to at least give you a headsup there are some or none of either along your route.

As usual, elaine is absolutely right. You need to contact him directly and if it helps, if we have to contact him via email, the address we use is: bruce@sintmaarten.net but that said, and noting you have a Comcast email, that could prove problematic as they (Comcast, that is) often block ema

Marigot, and in my opinion, virtually all of St. Martin/St. Maarten, had a very different flavor thirty years ago. We felt totally comfortable going anywhere on the island and we had virtually no qualms at all about giving our preteen and teen aged daughters full reign of the resort where we stayed. We knew without a doubt they would be safe and the staff would keep an eye on them if a problem

And as an added precaution, because things often look so very different at night, it's not a bad idea to check out your route during daylight, along with the various parking options depending on where you're going. Basically this is not a bad idea for any place on the island if you're not 100 percent sure of where you're going.

There are any number of good SXM rental agencies if Kennys/Lesley isn't available. I've never used but have heard good things about Unity and many people swear by AAA. We use Lesley and always book ridiculously early because of situations like yours and even then there have been a couple of occasions when he's hooked us up with a friend of his because he was completely booked.
