strange tree on your island

I was just visiting St. Maarten and saw a tree there that was quite interesting. It had green oval shaped objects that hung from a long stem from it's branches. The leaves, if I remember correctly, were slender, in bunches. Was wondering what was this oval object, nut? or fruit? & what was the tree?
