Another SXM quiz...
Posted by: gert (Moderator)

I found a really old SXM tourist guide. I am guessing it is from the 70s. Titled: St. Maarten - Tourist Guide for people who like to discover New Horizons In Fun. smiling smiley

First question:
I scanned in this ad (see below). Where was this supermarket? There is a little hint written in Dutch by my father-in-law...

Second question:
There are 8 hotels and 6 guesthouses listed (only Dutch side). Try to name 4 of these hotels and 3 guesthouses. smiling smiley

The supermarket is what we called '4 S Supermarket at the end of Front Street, where it made a left onto Back Street.

Hotels, I can only come up with three: Sea View, Little Bay, Mullet Bay.

Guest Houses: Mary's Fancy, Holland House are all that I can come up with. (Well there is one other but I can't remember the correct spelling. Panseagram (SP)

Now, see what you have done? I have to go to the attic and find all my old books and then it will Your Turn.

No I think it was located where "jump up Casino" is today... After 4 S Supermarket, I think it became an hardware store before becoming a casino... Am I wrong?

That is sort of where it was located. It was owned by Chester Wathey and so was there on the Emmaplein which is Wathey property.
I think the supermarket itself was actualy located reight next to where the casino is today.
There was nothing next to the supermarket.... then the Wathey's built Philipsburg Utilities which in its day was THE hardware store on the island..and that's where the casino is today.

Andrea, I love that shot of the Concord Hotel. Here is my shot

anther old hotel from those days is Simpson Bay Village Hotel

and then you have Princess Quarter Hotel in Sucker garden.
and does anyone remember a hotel by the name of Hunter House ?
Hint....there was a very well known popular restaurant on the premises after the hotel itself closed.

Guest houses. well, in town was, of course Pasanngrahan, already mentioned.
Then there was Captain Hodge's Guest House too in town.
I don't know if China Night Guest House was listed on that brochure, Gert, but that guest house on Back Street was where I first stayed when I first visited St. Maarten.

You are all doing really well! I will post the list later tonight. The Great Bay Hotel (originally named ... smiling smiley) isn't even on there. I just saw an ad for it in the guide: Ready for you in the spring of 1969. So my guide is pre-1969, not 70s.

China Night Guest House isn't on there Barbara. Sounds a bit shady smiling smiley

well, the cab driver from the airport pointed us there.
we came with no reservations..no nothing..and in February too!
then we asked him where could we rent a car and he pointed us to Cannegie Car rental smiling smiley
and the rest, as they say, is history.
Darn, I wish I had that cab driver's name..he changed my life. spinning smiley sticking its tongue out
